Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA) offers Drumming Classes By Teaching Artist Urie Kline on Saturdays as Scheduled Through August 4.
Created through PCCA?s Arts-in-Education program, this project is the first of its kind for PCCA. With this project, the Arts-in-Education program has begun what it intends to be an ongoing focus on multigenerational, community-building projects in the Lewisburg area. PCCA has administered residency programs in the Lewisburg area for more than 12 years as a partner of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, often in K-12 schools. This project combines recycling and reusing, education about Taiko?a Japanese drumming discipline, artistic expression, and a creative outlet for participants. These classes are free, multigenerational and inviting to participants of differing abilities.
This project is a partnership between PCCA, Donald L. Heiter Community Center and PCCA rostered teaching artist Urie Kline. Kline, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, also completed an 18-month fellowship with renowned Taiko artist Kenny Endo in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a week of workshops in Tokyo, Japan. He is the founder of Lyco Taiko, Williamsport?s own school of Tokyo-style Taiko, which performs and educates across the state of Pennsylvania. Kline joined the faculty of Lycoming College in Fall 2015 as an applied instructor, and joined PCCA?s team of rostered teaching artists in Spring 2018. Kline is committed to the study of percussion in all its many varieties, and firmly believes that the study of music from cultures outside one?s own creates better musicians and more empathetic, understanding global citizens.
No experience is necessary for the free classes, which are recommended for ages 8 and up. While supplies last, participants will keep their own drum, made of recycled tires.Tell a Friend
